You have probably seen a lot of letters describing the generation of pomsky. Breeders are very used to this lingo, but you may not be as familiar with all of these terms as you try to navigate the dog world to pick your new best friend. This article should help you understand all the symbols, but I strongly encourage a person to select a new pet based mostly on the personality and traits of the specific dog rather than selection based simply on generation.
F1: The parents of an F1 were a purebred Siberian Husky mother and a purebred Pomeranian father. An F1 pomsky is a 50/50 mix.
F2: The parents of an F2 pomsky were both F1 pomskies.
F3: The parents of an F3 pomsky were both F2 pomskies.
Multigen: This term is used for pomskies who are higher than F3. I have seen the term used when the generations are unequal on the two sides of the family tree. For example breeding an F2 and an F3 results in a puppy who could also be called an F3, but the term multigen can be used for simplicity.
As a general rule, the higher the generation the more breeders have been able to select breeding dogs for desireable traits to stabilize the expected appearance and temperment. The conclusion would be that multigen pomskies are becoming closer and closer to a fully recognizable breed with predictable characteristics. I would like to point out from my own experience that even in multigen litters of puppies there is a wide variety of personality from one puppy to another. It it still important to consider matching a puppy to a family based on the traits of the puppy and the needs of the family.
F1B: The "B" in this term means "backcross". An F1 pomsky is bred with a purebred husky or pomeranian. This results in a puppy who is a 25/75 mix depending upon which purebred dog was included in the backcross. This will bolster the traits of either original breed with 75% of the DNA.
F1X: This term is used when an F1 pomsky is bred with an outside breed. At this time the APKC recognizes a cross with American Eskimo dogs as a cross that can still be classified as a pomsky. As the pomsky breed develops, the ultimate goal is to create a predictable mix of the best characteristics of these 3 breeds.
