Is a Pomsky right for me?

That pomsky on the internet may be just about the cutest dog you have ever seen, but are you prepared to live with one?

Pomskies are active and extremely athletic. Mine can jump over a puppy containment gate with the greatest of ease. I like to say my mamma dog can fly like a gazelle. The puppy gates I use for litter management in my house seem to be there just to slow me down. The puppies can get over the puppy gates by 12 to 16 weeks of age. Every pomsky will need the to have an outlet for all of this energy. When you adopt a pomsky you need to have the time to take long walks or go outside to play in the yard.

Pomskies are also incredibly smart. My male dog can count any number 0 though 5 on command. I had a puppy in the last litter who learned to let himself out of his kennel within seconds. The good news is that high intelligence helps with training. The bad news is that with this intelligence also comes the well known husky tendancy to choose which commands to follow. Pomsky puppies are all a little different. Some are more independent, some are more interested in pleasing people, and some are incredibly motivated by rewards like treats.

From my experience the most universal pomsky trait is absolute devotion and attachment to one member of the family a little more than others. Each of my pomskies (puppies included) have chosen one member of the family as a primary person. They follow the favorite person from room to room and tend to stay within reach most of the time. Several have been very attached and want to be in a lap whenever they are allowed to be there. Some of them enjoy hanging out in the same room at all times, but without the need to be in constant contact.

Once your pomsky is trained you will have a loyal cuddly best friend. You will have a shadow wherever you go. Your buddy will love to run and play and will keep you active as well. I just want families who are thinking about adopting a puppy to remember that a puppy is far more than the cute ball of fluff that shows up in pictures.

To explain the picture at the top:

I was a willing participant in the creation of that picture. My mamma dog, Zari, loves to play in the hose while I water in the yard. She loves to pounce the water and bite the jet as it flys out of the hose. She digs and pounces in the puddle at the end of the hose with absolute glee. She is a great dog and this is her favorite activity ever. She is worth bathing every week or so because of how happy this makes her.
